Firstly, a very belated Happy New Year from all the team at Castle Piece Stables!
It has been a slightly frustrating few weeks, with nearly half of our last 30 runners reaching the frame, but with plenty of near-misses (seven seconds amongst those!), only one of those has come home in front. However, the horses continue in excellent form and hopefully a hatful of winners is just around the corner!
It was brilliant to see Balgemmois get off the mark at Leicester the fifth attempt, battling on very gamely having raced prominently throughout and holding off the persistent challenge of the runner-up.
The recently-turned five year old French-bred looks a progressive individual and ran a solid race when fourth back at the same course off a 7lbs higher mark. He looks sure to improve once sent chasing in time and is a very exciting prospect for his owners Marlborough Racing.
Six weeks on from finishing fourth in an Ascot bumper, Scorpion Haze ran another fine race to finish second, beaten just a length, at Uttoxeter just before Christmas and it is surely only a matter of time before he gets his head in front for Shaw Racing.
Three days earlier, Good Impression had finished a close second on his nursery debut over six furlongs on the fibresand at Southwell. A bargain buy for just £5,500 at Doncaster in September, he has since finished second twice more, going down by just a short-head at Kempton Park last time, and he fully deserves a change of fortune. That is also the case for another bargain buy The Special One, who has won three times since we purchased her for 6,500gns at the 2016 HIT Sale. She has placed on her last three starts and ought to get her head in front again soon.
Drewmain Legend was a close second of 17 on just her third outing in handicap company and continues to go the right way, whilst both Hepburn and Heresmynumber reached the frame last week and looks primed to strike soon!
