An agonising 12 minutes after the horses passed the post in the 7f handicap at Lingfield Park yesterday, Storm Melody was thankfully called the winner of a three-way photo (pictured right), getting off the mark on just his second start on the All-Weather for his owners in the Shaw Racing Partnership 2.
A bargain purchase for just £2,800 at the Ascot August Sale, he had finished a good third over 6f at Kempton Park on his previous outing/AW debut and was stepping up to 7f for just the second time in his career. However, he clearly stayed every yard of the trip, as he looked beaten a furlong from home, only to fly home and get his head in front on the line.
The handicapper is unlikely to put him up more than 2-3lbs for that success and, given he remains unexposed on the AW, there could well be more to come, especially as he will remain below his highest career-winning mark. We’ll keep him on the go in the coming weeks and I am confident he will be getting his head in front again soon.
